Exploration equals Science multiplied by Creativity. IMO

Where "Exploration" = Science x Creativity

We have already established that I'm a little obsessed with understanding the reasons why people get up off the couch and go out into the world and explore. Over time I have have come across several pretty good explanations., but might recently have had an epiphany on the subject. Read on.

The other day I was listening to Dr.Jill Bolte Taylor, a neuroanatomist, and Sir Ken Robinson, a leading educationer*, talking about science, creativity, education, one of them while handling a wiggly human brain**. Suddenly I realized that either one of the two halves of our brain, with their very specific and different purposes... and personalities. might be very unpleasant if left totally in charge.

Resaca Beach Culebra by Eric Wartenweiler Smith 2014

Resaca beach, on Culebra's north coast. After a 45 minute hike over boulders in a pouring rain, I found a lonely beach with salt spray from the breakers filling the air and rushing up the hillside.

Large format photographer and gallery owner Clark Lubbs gave me a complement that I wont soon forget in an online posting about this recent photo of mine. Considering Clarks masterful work in nature photography it really meant a lot to me, but then I remembered that I learned most of what I know from Clark in the first place, back when he was our Expedition Photographer for several years during the Voyages of the Discoverer.

Jonathan Green, Author of the Award Winning "Murder in the High Himalayas" joined us on board the Discoverer while writing an article called " A Different Kind of Catch" This was just the first of several projects we have worked on together. I hope we get a chance to do another adventure together soon.

We are several miles from Key West in the Florida straits, diving from the Discoverer Ketty Lund, a wooden-hulled scientific research vessel on a trip around the Keys. Her captain is Eric Smith, a muscular, salt-encrusted sea skipper and diver with a boyish gap between his front teeth who has piloted his boat and marine scientists around the Atlantic for years. On the long trips down from places like Labrador, Canada, to his home in the Keys, he will jump over the side and go spearfishing for grouper, snapper and tuna to feed himself and his crew. As we descend deeper into the cool depths, he is showing me how to hunt under water.
