In Just a Few Hours, I'll Board a Plane for Cairo, and I Want to Know What You Think About It

There are things in life more important than excavating Sunken Egyptian Cities.

But after 16 years of being on Underwater Archaeologist Franck Goddio's team, excavating Napoleon Bonaparte's Flag Ship, finding the sunken ruins of Cleopatras Palace, and discovering an entire city lost at sea, I know that there are a lot of things less important, too. At least in my opinion. Like who Snooki is.

So I'm heading back to Egypt to join Franck and the team, and to see what amazing discoveries await us under the sea this year.

In the past a lot of students and life-long-learners have asked questions through this blog about the excitement and adventure of exploration on (and Under) the sea. I really enjoy sharing my experiences in scientific exploration, and any questions or comments posted to this blog area great source of inspiration to me, and also are read by quite a few readers who haven't found the courage to comment, ( not yet, anyway!)

The next time I post, Ill be enveloped in the thick warm embrace of the world of underwater archaeology in Egypt!

Off to explore Alexandria Bay again huh? I wish you well. You have teamed with Franck Goddio several times, is each time different? Do you pick up where you left off last year? Any new possible discoveries around the corner or hidden beneath the waves and sediment?

I recall seeing you talk in Philadelphia at the Franklin Institute during the tour of the Cleopatra's Lost Palace Exhibition. You defined what you thought an explorer was or the act of exploration. My life seems quite simple although to many it includes many exciting things. But how do I instill the sense of exploration in my daughters? I want them to always ask questions and maintain a curiosity in many areas. Good Luck in Egypt! Looking forward to hearing many new stories!

Hey Don,
You have posed a really good question on the nature of Adventure, and Exploration. I read it during a brief window of internet access, and am now writing this response from on board ship and I don’t have access to a dictionary. I wonder if the great dictionaries agree on the definition of those terms?

And I wonder if the Explorers Club in New York has the same view on the definitions.
Of one thing I am sure, oth Adventure and exploration are a state of mind. Two people could experience the same voyage, shoulder to shoulder at the rail of a ship, and for one it could be an incredible adventure that provided new knowledge or a new way to interpret what we thought we knew, and the other might consider it nothing more than a long, soggy commute.

I the other hand, I do know the difference between Exploring and Being Lost.
It’s a notebook.
