As I depart for San Juan, I ponder the fate of the Taino, who made bold voyages far out of sight of land to discover and colonized the Islands of the Eastern Caribbean. How far was their first ocean voyage, and from where on the mainland did they originally depart? Over the next few weeks I'll be investigating the maritime history of these early voyages of exploration, but right now I'm still wondering; What traces of this sea faring society still exist in modern Puerto Rico, and how will I find them?

Thanks for the comment Karen, I have been ibnterested in the Taino for a long time, but this is the first time I have had to visit one of the places with a large ammount of their cultural heritage materials. I am mostly interested in thir voyaing canoes and techniques.
