the most current Nautical Charts are still those made on 1 April 1836 when the
HMS Beagle under Captain Robert FitzRoy arrived to take soundings establishing
the profile of the atoll as part of the survey expedition of the Beagle. Also
aboard, one young Charles Darwin.
When I tell people that I want to build a Floating Living Island, they sometimes think that I also want to start my own society, currency, culture, etc. Well the truth is...
The nuts and bolts of building an actual, functioning Floating Island is what fascinates me and other members of the International Ocean Station project.
But you might find it interesting to know that when Darwin and Fitzroy sailed into Cocos Keeling during their extraordinary voyage of exploration and adventure, the island was already Occupied and claimed by an enterprizing Scottish merchant seaman named Captain John Clunies-Ross who had already established his own private nation including a currency.
Our visit to the atolls was very interesting, and yes, the charts were still spot-on.
